Dora Grieves Three Teen Deaths As School Year Begins
The start of the new school year has been a tragic one in Walker County. Three teenagers have lost their lives, all within two months.
The City of Dora, in Walker County, was still mourning the loss of an unnamed Dora High School student who took her own life two months ago when 17-year-old Dora High junior Justin Bailey took his life Monday. "He was Justin, known for his warmth, sense of humor, and giving nature," according to his obituary. He was laid to rest next to his grandparents today.
On the night of Justin's vigil, another Dora High student, 15-year-old Olivia Savage, died. Funeral services for the young lady, known for being a compassionate and caring Christian, will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Sumiton Church of God. Visitation will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, allowing family and friends a chance to honor and remember this beautiful soul. A graveside service will follow on Tuesday at 10:00 at Empire Memorial Gardens
The deaths of the three youths have stunned the city of just over 2,000 residents. Local officials and school leaders say additional counseling resources have been made available for students and families as the community continues to cope with the string of tragedies.
Dora Police Chief Jared Hall reached out to youth in the community in a Facebook post: "Our community and our local schools have experienced some heartbreaking losses involving our young people. There are no easy words for the pain that families, friends, classmates, teachers, and our entire community are experiencing.
"I want every young person in our community to know something very important: You are not alone, and you don’t have to face difficult times by yourself," Chief Hall wrote as he encouraged youth to seek help by calling the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
The Facebook site Everything Walker County joined in encouraging youth not to face difficulties by themselves and for the community to reach out to its youth: "September is Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and I believe this is the time for our community to come together—churches, schools, organizations, families, businesses, parents, and anyone who cares about the children in our community.
A special community-wide service is set for Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Sumiton Church of God.
