Authorities are investigating after a deadly plane crash along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

At least two people are dead after a small private aircraft crashed into Bon Secour Bay near Gulf Shores Saturday evening. Emergency crews from multiple agencies rushed to the scene as search and rescue efforts unfolded in the water.

The crash happened around 6:50 p.m. as the aircraft was approaching the Gulf Shores airport, according to an article by Fox News. The plane reportedly went down in the area of Sailboat Bay and Plash Island.

Local police and first responders quickly began coordinating a large response in the area.

“A large emergency response effort is underway in the area of Sailboat Bay and Plash Island following a plane crash in Bon Secour Bay,” Gulf Shores Police said in a statement, according to an article by Fox News.

Marine units, dive teams, and other emergency responders were sent into the water as crews searched for the aircraft and anyone on board.

Officials later confirmed that two people were killed in the crash. Authorities said the aircraft was believed to be a small private plane headed toward Gulf Shores International Airport when the incident happened, according to an article by Fox News.

The aircraft is believed to have been a Beechcraft Bonanza, a single engine plane commonly used for private travel, according to an article by Fox News.

Search and recovery efforts involved the U.S. Coast Guard along with local emergency agencies from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and surrounding communities.

At this point, investigators have not released the identities of those involved, and officials have not confirmed what may have caused the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly what led to the aircraft going down in the bay.
