Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon announced his plans to assist the victims of a deadly flood resulting from days of heavy rain happening in Kentucky.

Herndon was on Townsquare Media's 95.3 The Bear's Steve and DC Morning Show Monday morning where he discussed a donation drive that will be held on Monday and Tuesday to gather various items, such as school and medical supplies, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, canned foods, pet supplies among other things being collected to assist with the efforts in Kentucky.

Herndon said these efforts would not be possible without "big-hearted folks" who help contribute, especially in light of the impact of the April 2011 tornadoes that devastated the city of Tuscaloosa.

"We went through it in 2011. As far as the tornado, Northport was spared but Tuscaloosa wasn't but we were there for our friends and as long as I'm still living we're going to be there for our friends anywhere we can go," Herndon said.

The donations can be dropped off at 2728 Lurleen Wallace Boulevard in Northport. Monetary donations are also being accepted and will be used to purchase additional items.

Herndon will take these items to Lynch, Kentucky on Wednesday to assist the victims that are in need.

Herndon has previously collected and distributed supplies for disaster victims in another state, including Louisiana, Florida and several cities across the state of Alabama.
