Getting You Ready to Vote: Forms of Alabama Photo Voter ID
As we all get ready for the general election in November, now is the time to prepare to make sure you are ready to vote. Two essential steps are 1) get registered to vote, and 2) if you don’t know if you are registered to vote, you should double-check that now. Another important part of voting is being aware of what is required to vote, and that includes identification. Click here to review the photo Voter ID law that can be found in the Code of Alabama (1975) §17-9-30. According to the Alabama Secretary of State, the valid forms of identification are as follows: “Listed below are the approved forms of photo ID, as stated in the law.”
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License (not expired or has been expired less than 60 days)
- Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Digital Driver’s License
- Valid Alabama Nondriver ID (not expired or has been expired less than 60 days)
- Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Digital Nondriver ID
- Valid Alabama Photo Voter ID Card
- Valid State-Issued ID (Alabama or any other state)
- Examples
- Valid AL Department of Corrections Release - Temporary ID (Photo Required)
- Valid AL Movement/Booking Sheet from Prison/Jail System (Photo Required)
- Valid Pistol Permit (Photo Required)
- Valid Federal-Issued ID
- Valid US passport
- Valid Employee ID from Federal Government, State of Alabama, County, Municipality, Board, or other entity of this state
- Valid student or employee ID from a public or private college or university in the State of Alabama (including postgraduate technical or professional schools)
- Valid student or employee ID issued by a state institution of higher learning in any other state
- Valid Military ID
- Valid Tribal ID
If you are like me, you rely on having a driving license for your voting identification. But, I know first hand that not everyone drives. My parents, after a certain age, did not drive. However, they did have an approved ID with the “Valid Alabama Nondriver ID.” Therefore, for some reason, you do not have any of the listed above forms of identification, you can obtain a free Alabama photo voter ID.
