As our area faces very cold temperatures, to put it into perspective, “Over a hundred daily record lows could be set through the central states Tuesday through Friday,” said The Weather Channel.

Looking Ahead to Wednesday

Wintry Precipitation

Wednesday morning, a wintry mix could impact parts of the Highway 278 corridor. This includes a portion of Lamar County and a tiny section of Fayette County. Other areas could see a cold rain.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “Precipitation over the northern quarter of the state will be a "wintry mix" of some light snow, sleet, and freezing rain, generally north of U.S. 278 (north of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). “

Hard Freeze Outlook

We anticipate a hard freeze impacting West and Central Alabama on Wednesday and Thursday nights. This brings the risk of bursting exposed and unprotected pipes and hypothermia. Be sure to plan accordingly with safety precautions.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said “There is a medium to high chance of hard freeze conditions Wednesday and Thursday nights with it feeling as much as 10 degrees colder due to a northerly breeze.”

Thursday Outlook

“Temperatures will drop into the teens over North Alabama Thursday and Friday morning, and a freeze is likely down to the Gulf Coast both mornings,” said Spann.

The Townsquare Media Weather Center will continue to monitor this system because changing weather conditions could impact the forecast.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
