The Bezos Day One Families Fund presents yearly recognition to organizations and community groups actively engaged in impactful and compassionate endeavors to assist families facing homelessness. This includes individuals without shelter or residing in temporary shelters, with the ultimate goal of helping them secure safe, stable housing and attain overall well-being.

Temporary Emergency Services of West Alabama has been honored to be one of 38 organizations nationwide that received a grant from the Bezos Day One Families Fund.

Since 2018, the Day One Families Fund has issued 208 leadership awards totaling $639.1 million to organizations in 48 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico,” said Bezo Day One Fund.

The Tuscaloosa organization focuses on assisting individuals and families in times of crisis by offering temporary financial aid and other forms of assistance for over 75 years.

The Amazon founder awarded Temporary Emergency Services $1 million.

In an exclusive interview with the Tuscaloosa Thread, Dr. Karen Thompson-Jackson, Temporary Emergency Services Executive Director, said that the reality of the $1 million grant has yet to sink in fully. She has “profound happiness for our team at TES, our board members, and the community that supports us."

Being one of 38 organizations nationwide brought an overwhelming mix of emotions for Jackson. She “felt tears of joy for our organization's recognition, coupled with a sadness about the dire needs in our community that led to this award. The most prominent thought in my mind was the urgent need for continued community support.”

Bezos Day One Fund Gives a “Renewed Sense of Hope"

“Being invited to apply was a clear indication that our efforts haven't gone unnoticed. It's astonishing how this 'little engine' has gained national attention and truly feels extraordinary."

Temporary Emergency Services focuses on the vital principle of the commitment to trying to do our best. “We focus on utilizing whatever resources we have to make a difference. We must maintain and grow community support to continue our work,” said Jackson.

Despite the substantial award that they have received, Jackson feels that fundraising continues to be a significant challenge. This funding gives Temporary Emergency Services a “renewed sense of hope."

Impact of Bezos Day One Fund in Tuscaloosa

Jackson said the organization is still finalizing the specifics, but “the primary allocation will be towards supporting unhoused or homeless individuals and families.”

The objective is to assist with utility and housing deposits, facilitating the transition from homelessness to secure and permanent shelter.

With 2024 right around the corner, Jackson feels that their focus is to continue enhancing their “annual fundraiser and continuously keeping the community informed about the needs of our clients. Strengthening these areas is crucial for our ongoing mission."
