Deja Vu For Alabama, Devonta Smith Commits to Tide

Alabama added another marquee player with the commitment of three- star cornerback Devonta Smith, out of Ohio.

You might be asking yourself, doesn't Alabama already have a Devonta Smith on the roster? Yes, this is true, but thankfully the two players spell their names a bit differently.

The National Championship hero wide-receiver, spells his name as "DeVonta Smith", the new commit spells name as "Devonta Smith". Who would've thought that one capital letter would make such a difference for a football team?

According to the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the 6-foot, 185-pound Smith is the 30th ranked cornerback in the 2021 class. Smith, out of La Salle High School in Cincinnati Ohio is ranked a four-star prospect by the 247 Sports metric and the eighth overall recruit in the state of Ohio.

Smith was originally committed to Ohio State, but shocked the Buckeyes when he de-committed last week. Many recruiting analysts predicted that Alabama would be his new home, but didn't expect the turnaround to be this quick.

This is the second time in the last couple weeks, that Alabama has been able to flip an Ohio State commit. Five-star offensive tackle, JC Latham was presumed to join the Big 10, but opted to take his talents to the SEC instead.

In his commitment tweet, Smith said that "GPS Done Found A Better Home" .This is a pretty significant statement after both Alabama and Ohio State scheduled a 2027 and 2028 matchup recently.

 
Alabama defensive backs coach, Karl Scott is hoping this signing will help fill the hole that was left in the secondary, after safety Xavier McKinney, and cornerback Trevon Diggs moved on to the NFL. With stud cornerback, Patrick Surtain Jr. likely leaving for the NFL after the 2020 season recruiting defensive backs is a priority in the 2021 class. Scott and running back's coach Charles Huff served as Smith's primary recruiters.

 
This is rumored to be a pretty significant recruiting week for Alabama, and it seems like Smith is just the tip of the iceberg. Dominoes will continue to fall in the next few days.

Crimson Tide legend Shaun Alexander tweeted his welcome to Smith and called the young cornerback Alexander's cousin.
