Dan + Shay Hope to Record a Christmas Album … Eventually
Could a Dan + Shay holiday album be a part of Christmas future? The duo's Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney aren't ruling that out.
Ahead of their performance during the taping of the 2018 CMA Country Christmas special, the singers shared that they have toyed with the idea of recording a holiday album, but it's all a matter of timing. Musically, Smyers and Mooney devoted much of their attention in 2018 to their self-titled album, a project that saw the massive reach of "Tequila." But they hope to find time to record a Christmas album at some point in the future.
"We've been spending a couple of years making our record that came out this year, and we've been doing all these different versions—alternate versions, acoustic versions, all these things—and I was like, 'Let's do a Christmas version!'"
Smyers says (quote via the Boot). "But it's hard to find the time, you know? When you make a Christmas record, you have to kind of get started in, like, March or April to get it turned around in time."
The "Speechless" stars have treated fans to performances of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" during the annual CMA Country Christmas, and 2018 finds them adding a unique spin on "I'll Be Home For Christmas." They've also taken on "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "O Holy Night" over the years. Though they can't officially commit to recording a holiday album, it is a passion project that's on their radar.
"We always say we're getting closer and closer. But at least we know the lyrics to four or five of them, so that's a start," Smyers admits. "Like Shay said, we've got a catalog: all the songs we've done at the CMA Country Christmas performances. So maybe in the next couple of years, I don't know."
