Could a Significant Ice Storm Be Coming to Alabama Soon?
Yesterday (Saturday, February 6, 2021) was a miserable day. There were cold temperatures, cloudy conditions, and light rain for most of the day. Some Alabama places did hit 50 degrees and some received a mix of rain, sleet, and snow. North Alabama did get snow.
Today (Sunday, February 7, 2021), portions of our coverage area will have mostly cloudy or cloudy skies. Overall, we should get into the lower 50s today. Here is how our coverage area counties will shape up temperature-wise according to the National Weather Service.
Bibb – High 52. Low 33.
Fayette – High 50. Low 31.
Greene – High 52. Low 34.
Hale – High 51. Low 34.
Jefferson – High 51. Low 32.
Lamar – High 50. Low 31.
Perry – High 52. Low 34.
Pickens – High 52. Low 33.

Tracking Winter Weather Potential
ABC 33/40 and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist James Spann calls Friday and beyond “model madness," with radical thermal differences between the American GFS and the European ECMWF global models. The GFS drives very cold, Arctic air southward into Alabama, suggesting single-digit lows over the Tennessee Valley by Sunday morning. But, the ECMWF is about 30-35 degrees warmer, and keeps the Arctic air to the north. The "National Blend of Models" offered by NOAA, as you might expect, is somewhere in the middle.”
The Weather Factory with the Alabama Weather Blog shares their thoughts that they are watching a “system that will be coming in around Monday night the 15th and Tuesday the 16th. Recent runs of the GFS have been persistently showing signals for a significant ice storm across parts of North and Central Alabama. But there is no way to forecast what will happen this far out.”
As my personal rule in weather forecasting, I feel it is always best to be prepared in any season. Especially when it comes to winter weather in the Deep South, we don’t get it often, and I rather have you aware of it now so you can be mindful of it as the week develops. My Dad always said something along the lines of, “if you don’t prepare, you prepare to fail.” I will be monitoring this weather situation multiple times a day as we get closer to the possibility of a winter weather event. @MaryKRadio
