If you had hopes of seeing Chris Evans continuing as Captain America beyond Avengers 4 ... uh ... maybe just pretend you never saw this article?

Evans has made no secret of his plan to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after he fulfills his contract with Avengers 4. But the tweet he sent out today to commemorate the official conclusion of his participation in Avengers 4 couldn’t be any more clear: Cap is putting down his shield:

First of all 😭😭😭.

Okay, now that that’s out of the way: Cap is done. He may not necessarily die making a heroic sacrifice to restore the half of the universe that got eradicated by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe somewhere along the way in Avengers 4 the Super-Soldier Serum flowing through his veins that keeps him young wears off or gets seeped from his body by Thanos and he turns into an old man and he has to retire from active duty. Or maybe he just gets sick of arguing with Tony Stark and just hangs up the shield and walks away from his job. All three of these outcomes seems plausible — and very much in character for Steve Rogers.

But no matter what happens, you can pretty much bank on it: Chris Evans ain’t coming back for more movies after Avengers 4, at least for a while. (Anything’s possible, especially in the world of comics and comic-book movies, where there are millions of dollars to be made.) So enjoy this impending farewell to one of the best movie superheroes of all time. And try not to cry too much while you think about it.
