The Townsquare Media Weather Center is monitoring the potential for severe weather on Saturday, December 28.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, "Rainy and stormy weather is expected for much of the day on Saturday as a system moves across the Tennessee Valley.”

A minimal threat of severe storms may arise in the afternoon and potentially continue into the evening as a cold front approaches the region from the west.

Risk Areas

The Storm Prediction Center has defined a "slight risk" for severe thunderstorms Saturday for a small part of far West Alabama. Almost the remainder of the state is in a "marginal risk.”

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, “While rain is possible at any hour Saturday, the chance of stronger storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours.”

Possible Threats

The current outlook forecasts the main threats as a couple of tornadoes, damaging winds up to 60 mph, and quarter-size hail.

“A few storms could produce strong, gusty winds and hail. A brief, isolated tornado can't be totally ruled out,” said Spann. “But the convective pattern will be messy, and the morning rain could limit the chance of severe storms later in the day.”
