Alabama’s Holiday Weekend Includes Strong to Severe Storms
We anticipate an active weather pattern this holiday weekend as several disturbances move eastward across the region. These disturbances could spark the development of showers and thunderstorms, with a heightened risk for strong to severe storms.
Friday Forecast
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, “Where storms do form, they will be strong over the northern half of the state with potential for some small hail and gusty winds. The chance of any one spot getting wet over North Alabama is 30-40 percent and around 20 percent for the southern counties.”
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the main threats are damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter-size. The main activity is generally north of the Hwy 80 corridor from noon to 9 p.m.
There is a “marginal” and “slight” risk across various counties within the Townsquare Media Coverage area.
Saturday Outlook
“The weather won't change much over Memorial Day weekend. Partly sunny days with the chance of a passing shower or storm in spots each day,” said Spann.
The main activity is generally south of the I-22 to I-20 corridor from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Also, the main threats are damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter-size, said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
Sunday Thoughts
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the main threats are damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter-size. The main activity is generally north of I-20, starting in the afternoon and lasting through the evening.
Advice from James Spann
“While much of the weekend will be dry, keep in mind a few storms could be strong. When thunder roars, go indoors!"
Looking Ahead to Monday
“Showers and storms will be more numerous Monday night as a cold front pushes into the state,” said Spann.
Please keep in mind that as weather conditions develop this could change some of the future forecasting. The Townsquare Media Weather crew will bring you updates if needed.
