I Dream Big Charter School Opens in West Alabama
I Dream Big Charter School (IDB), in partnership with Stillman College, will open its doors on Wednesday, August 13, welcoming 200 middle school students in grades 6-8 across West Alabama for the first day of school. This marks the culmination of three years of vision, planning, and collaboration.
Alabama’s First and Only HBCU-Partnered Charter School
“The partnership between Stillman and I Dream Big Charter School reflects our commitment to Communiversity — a vision where the college and community collaborate to expand educational access, empower families, and cultivate leaders for the future,” said Dr. Yolanda Page, President of Stillman College. “We believe this collaboration will not only change the lives of these students but will strengthen West Alabama for generations.”
As IDB students step onto campus for the first time, they will be met with a spirited welcome and encouragement. Community members, representatives from Stillman College, and dedicated IDB staff will be on hand to help celebrate this exciting new chapter in the students' educational journey.
“Our vision was always to create a school that inspires purpose, excellence, and possibility for every student,” said Dr. Angela Lang, Executive Director and Superintendent of IDB.

According to the press release, “As Alabama’s first and only HBCU-partnered charter school, I Dream Big Charter School is proud to introduce the Big Picture Learning National Model to the state — a transformative, relationship-centered approach to education that blends rigorous academics with real-world, student-driven learning experiences.”
Lang said that “Partnering with Stillman College and launching this national model here in Alabama is a milestone for our state and our community.”
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., IDB students will engage in a curriculum enriched with personalized learning plans and meaningful, hands-on projects designed to spark curiosity and foster growth.
Dr. Lucretia Prince, Head of School, added, “We are committed to ensuring that our students not only achieve academically but also grow as leaders and changemakers for their communities.”
“The opening marks the culmination of both national and local organizations,” said the press release. Such as the “United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Charter School Growth Fund, New Schools Venture Fund, Build Excel Sustain, The Daniel Foundation, Camelback Ventures, and New Schools for Alabama.”
I Dream Big Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school serving students in grades 6–8 across West Alabama, with plans to add a new grade level each year.
The school is driven by its D.R.E.A.M. values — Determined, Responsible, Empathetic, Attitude, and Motivated.
