Nobody can deny that social media needs more safety features and stronger protections, especially for young people.

TikTok and the state of Alabama have been at odds for several months. This led Alabama to file a lawsuit against TikTok. That lawsuit has been settled for at least $100 million. Under the agreement, TikTok must also implement several safety features for teens in Alabama. There is no way to see that as anything but a huge victory for all of us in Alabama.
The lawsuit filed by the state of Alabama accused TikTok of having negative effects on the mental health of young students. The lawsuit also argued that the social media app uses algorithms built on addictive properties. Alabama argued that this could be very harmful to children. The settlement says the app will make platform-level changes for all teen users in Alabama.
TikTok will also remove cosmetic procedure filters for children and teens, implement a daily time limit, and ban use between midnight and 6 am. Teens in Alabama will also get a prompt suggesting a "pause" after they have been on the platform for fifteen minutes straight. They will receive another prompt after sixty and ninety minutes. Are these safety filters enough? Do you think these filters will actually work?
At least it is a step in the right direction.
