Brittany Davis is a Phenomenal Woman of West Alabama

Alabama senior basketball player Brittany Davis may be known for her domination on the court, earning her All-SEC honors for the 2022 season and leading the conference in three-pointers made. But what a lot of people may not know is what she has had to sacrifice to get to where she is.

Davis came to the University of Alabama for her sophomore season in 2019-20, playing in all 30 games that year for the Tide. When it came time for her junior season, however, she had to step away from the team to focus on her pregnancy.

"...The hardest part was telling Coach Curry I was pregnant and had to step away from the game I've loved since I was a kid. I honestly didn't know how to feel at first when breaking the news. I wasn't sure how Coach was going to react, you know? This was bigger than basketball and truly a life-changing moment for me. 'We're going to get through this, and we're going to support you,' she said. 'Brittany, we're behind you.' Hard to describe the relief I felt right after that conversation. It was a pivotal moment for me. It's when I started to think that everything was going to be okay after all. Seeing my coach, teammates, and, most of all, my family not giving up on me helped me not to give up on myself. From that point on, I knew I could do this. Both on and off the court." - Brittany Davis

Her daughter, Brielle, was born on November 26, 2020. Davis stated in her Tide Tribune article titled "Brielle" that after her daughter was born, she was even more motivated to get back on the court for her daughter and their future. As soon as she was able, Davis got back to training and practicing so she could play for the Crimson Tide in 2021-22.

Which is exactly what she did.

Now, Davis is working to juggle not only being a student and a mother, but also an athlete with a strict practice schedule. To make things work, Davis has had to sacrifice some time with her daughter as Brielle lives with her parents in her hometown in Georgia so she can practice and complete all her schoolwork.

She works to finish her schoolwork early on each week so her parents can bring Brielle to visit her as often as they can with her busy basketball schedule. Teammate Megan Abrams has even been quoted saying she does her homework in the Ladies' locker room exactly for that reason. She facetimes her daughter as much as she can to stay involved in watching her grow up.

"They're taking amazing care of my daughter at home so that I can continue my education and basketball career. I can't even put into words how much I appreciate them for sacrificing their time to take care of my child. It's hard just seeing her on weekends, but it's what's best for her at this moment." -  Brittany Davis

As difficult as leaving her daughter back in GA has been, finishing out her schooling and taking basketball as far as she can is important to her so she can give herself and her daughter the best future possible.

Because of the support from her family, coaches, teammates, and the Alabama community, Davis has been able to make this goal a reality. She understands how far teamwork can go on and off the court because of her unique situation, which is why she tweets the same quote after every win: "By ourselves we can do so little, but together we can do so much."

Now, Davis is on track to graduate in May and begin a master's program in the fall, so she'll be staying in Tuscaloosa one my ore year to play for the women's basketball team. One step closer to providing a better future for her daughter.

"Just having my daughter in my life and being a mother made me a better person because it forced me to look at things differently. Life is now about me being the provider and ensuring we don't have to struggle. There's no greater motivating factor. I'm going to continue having a positive attitude each and every time I walk through these doors... I'm more focused than ever before and no longer just going through the motions. There's too much riding on this opportunity for me not to give everything I have. Today, I wear three hats proudly—mother, student, and basketball player." - Brittany Davis

Davis serves as living proof for women of West Alabama and the world that although it may take other sacrifices, you don't have to sacrifice your personal and career goals to be a mom. She is taking steps to provide for her family with her daughter as her motivator, writing her name in the women's and sports history books along the way here at UA.

And that is exactly why Davis is a Phenomenal Woman of West Alabama.
