No. 1 Recruit in 2022 Class Flips to Jackson State in Dramatic Fashion
Travis Hunter, a cornerback recruit from Collins Hill High School in Suwannee, GA, shocked the world with his announcement on early signing day.
Hunter is a 5-star and the No. 1 recruit in the nation for the class of 2022 according to 247Sports. He had been committed to Florida State since March 3, 2020 and received his offer from the Seminoles in November of 2019.
Florida State was one of 16 offers he had going into early signing day. Laid out on the table in front of him for his signing ceremony was an Auburn hat, a Georgia hat, and of course, a Florida State hat. But what happened with those caps is what shocked everyone.
Hunter quickly tossed away the Auburn cap, and soon the Georgia cap after placing it on his head, leaving behind only the FSU hat. After placing it on his head, he quickly tossed it away as well, asking someone in the audience to toss him another.
The hat he was thrown was a Jackson State one, an FCS teamed coached by former Florida State Seminole defensive back great Deion Sanders. JSU hadn’t even been apart of his offers list on 247Sports prior to Dec. 15, 2021, which is what caused such a shock.
Hunter had also cited Florida State as his “dream school” multiple times after his commitment, but according to his twitter post announcing his commitment to Jackson State, the appeal of the “rich history of football” at HBCUs is what changed his mind.
A No. 1 recruit heading to an FCS school is almost unheard of, but Sanders managed to pull it off and even teased the shocking announcement yesterday on Barstool Sports “Pro-Football Football Show” which he co-hosts.
“Signing day is tomorrow. I’m going on record to tell you guys, we’re gonna shock the country.”
Hunter, the top recruit, will join two other commits to Jackson State for the 2022 class, a recruiting class of three that is already ranked no. 114 on 247Sports. Sanders gaining the nation’s top recruit could up the ante on his recruiting pitches, so it will be exciting to see how JSU’s 2022 class develops after this shocking commitment.
