Demopolis High School’s football game at Selma ended early Friday night after gunshots were heard outside the stadium, and the Demopolis school system says it will take the matter to the Alabama High School Athletic Association on Monday.

The game, Selma High School’s homecoming, was stopped before halftime. Demopolis City Schools said in a statement that the gunfire came from outside the stadium and that Selma City Schools told them it did not involve the game.

“The safety of our students, players, coaches, and fans is always our top priority,” the Demopolis administration said. “The administration, athletic staff, and law enforcement worked quickly and efficiently to safely evacuate the stadium and help everyone get on their way home.”

Selma police responded to the scene near Memorial Stadium. No injuries were reported and Selma Police Chief Ettice Brickus said the game was called off as a precaution.

Demopolis City Schools described the location as a neighborhood roughly a mile from the stadium.

Selma City Schools said the shooting was unrelated to the game. Superintendent David Scott said in a statement carried by Patch that the district wants “to ensure the safety of everyone who attends our athletic events.”

The Selma Police Department is investigating. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 334-215-7867, where tips may be left anonymously.

Demopolis administrators said they will follow up with the Alabama High School Athletic Association on Monday to discuss Friday night’s events. Neither school system has said how the early stoppage will affect the result or either team’s record.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the law enforcement officers, administrators, coaches, parents, and fans who worked together to help keep our students safe,” the Demopolis statement said. “We are grateful for everyone’s cooperation and quick response during a difficult situation.”
