Carrie Underwood Honors Toby Keith With Gorgeous ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’ [Watch]

Carrie Underwood took moment to honor fellow Okie Toby Keith during her performance at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday (April 13).

The Opry member opted to cover his 1993 hit "Should've Been a Cowboy," which has been a favorite for many country artists to cover. Keith died on Feb. 5, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

The "Denim & Diamonds" singer kept her version true to its original form, her powerful vocals to carrying the iconic lyrics.

After learning of Keith's passing, Underwood was one of dozens of country singers who shared their condolences and memories of the country veteran on social media. She said heaven gained a cowboy that day.

"Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven," she wrote at the time. "Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir!"

"We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend," she added.

The Opry performance isn't the only time the "Out of That Truck" hitmaker has taken on the wildly popular song: Underwood sang "Should've Been a Cowboy" during the 2022 BMI Country Awards when Keith was recognized as a BMI Icon.

How Did Toby Keith Die?

Keith died on Feb. 5, 2024 after a lengthy fight with stomach cancer. He first revealed his diagnosis to his fans in June 2022. He was 62 years old when he passed.
