Is Tuscaloosa becoming a safer place to live? The answer is both yes and no.

The Good News: Homicides were down last year. There were 10 total in 2018 as opposed to 18 in 2017, (a decrease of 45%). Which is the lowest number of Homicides in Tuscaloosa County since 2002.

The Not-So-Good News: Felony assaults were up last year. 134 of them in 2018 as compared to 98 in 2017.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes investigators point out that they’ve made arrests in, or cleared every homicide case since 2014. They attribute that to the quality of investigators that are working homicide cases, and to the leads and information which are generated by people coming forward.

Captain Kip Hart told WVUA 23 News, “We could process the evidence and things like that, but a lot of times it takes leads and information from people out in the community who see and know what’s going on to help us get final closure for the families.”

So, as always, if you see something, say something.
