I came across a thread on Reddit that reading caused me to feel pain similar to that experienced from a brain freeze.

Apparently, this is homework sent home with the poster's first grade child who attends a public elementary school.

Some internal protective mechanism designed to protect my body from harm must have be the cause for my momentary loss of consciousness, but I eventually came to. I spent more time than I'm willing to admit trying to figure this chicanery out but I eventually did after reading deep into the comments concentrating very hard.

The general consensus from other commentators was outrage. Those who understood the formula felt the exercise was unnecessarily overcomplicated and others wondered how parents were supposed to help their children when they couldn't understand the questions themselves.

Evidently, this is part of the Common Core initiative adopted by many states, including Alabama.
