Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend
If your house is like ours and some of your clocks are still an hour ahead, this weekend they will have the right time again. We spring ahead this weekend, and lose an hour of sleep, as Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday.
DST officially starts at 2 a.m. local time, so most of us will move their clocks ahead one hour before they go to bed Saturday night. Sunrise and sunset will be about one hour later on March 11 than the day before, meaning there will be more light in the evening hours.
The clock-changing tradition dates back to Benjamin Franklin, who came up with the idea to reset clocks in summer months in an effort to conserve energy. DST wasn't instituted officially until World War I, when Germany put the plan in place in an effort to conserve fuel. Europe came on board soon after, followed by the U.S. in 1918.
Since 2007, DST has begun on the second Sunday in March. The time will change again on Nov. 4 when clocks will move back one hour.
