Alabama became the 37th state to allow same-sex marriage today; however, couples across the state--and even in Tuscaloosa--are finding it difficult to obtain a marriage license following an order from Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore.

Moore defied the federal ruling and ordered probate judges across the state to refuse to issue marriage licenses to any couple whose union is "inconsistent" with the Alabama State Constitution's definition of marriage. Many judges have followed Moore's order; Tuscaloosa County Probate Judge Hardy McCollum stated that no same-sex marriage licenses will be issued unless an order from a higher court is received.

Couples who came to the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse in hopes of getting married were handed a copy of Moore's order before being turned away.

Couples in Jefferson County were able to be married; many received support from a crowd who cheered them on. Read more from al.com HERE.
