Cullman, Alabama is home to the Ave Maria Grotto, a miniature version of some of the world's most famous architectural structures.

Built by Benedictine monk Joseph Zoettl from 1912 to 1958, this manmade wonder began out of sheer boredom. Over the years, the four-acre park grew to contain 125 small-scale replicas of buildings such as shrines of the Virgin Mary, scenes from the Holy Land, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Although some people criticize Zoettl for scaling the models incorrectly, many are simply amazed at his work considering he had never visited the actual buildings in person. Most of his work was done using postcards as an example.

In 1961 Brother Joseph passed away but guests are still welcome to appreciate the Grotto that is well-maintained by the Abbey.  The attraction is located off Interstate 65, one mile east of Cullman.
