The process leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft has been anything but smooth for former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster.

The 2017 Butkus winner first underwent surgery on his rotator cuff in February, which prevented him from participating in any drills at the NFL Combine. It turns out it didn’t matter anyway because Foster was sent home from Indianapolis early after an altercation with a hospital worker. After that was cleared up and explained, things died down for a bit.

Then a check-up on his shoulder this week resulted in conflicting reports about his recovery. Now, there’s news from’s Ian Rapoport that a diluted urine sample resulted in a positive drug test at the NFL Combine. From that report:

Last month, Foster was notified that his urine sample obtained in Indianapolis during the combine was reported as dilute. Based on the provisions of the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse, “this will be treated like a positive test.”

The report also states that Foster blames dehydration and possible food poisoning led to him drinking a lot of water and Gatorade. As a result, Foster will be in the NFL’s drug program moving forward and will face random drug tests, but he told that he’s ready to be tested now.

As for Foster’s draft stock, we’ll find out how much these last two months will impact his position in next week’s NFL Draft. The first round gets underway next Thursday night from Philadelphia.
