For people who love bacon but hate everything it does to their diet, CBS claims scientists in China have created low fat pigs and retailers are hoping that means one day they will be able to sell true low fat bacon.

The scientists used a gene editing technique to genetically alter the pigs. The experiment is looking to make pigs less susceptible to the cold. Scientists noted that modern pigs, especially younger ones, lack the ability to deal with colder temperatures and therefore build up unhealthy levels of fat. The test group carried 24% less body fat than the non-test group.

Although the genetic breakthrough may eventually mean leaner bacon in China, Roberts added that FDA regulations in the U.S. will likely keep the pigs out of America for the moment.
