These days it seems every song is scoured for evidence of jabs toward other celebrities, and Kacey Musgraves is not immune. Some have suggested one of the tracks on her new record Pageant Material, “Good Ol’ Boys Club,” is a subtle diss of Taylor Swift, but Musgraves says that is not the case.

The specific line in question is "Another gear in a big machine don’t sound like fun to me,” which some say may be referencing Swift, as she is signed to Big Machine Label Group. Musgraves defends the song’s message, saying it has nothing to do with the 1989 singer.

“It’s about not wanting to be part of anybody’s club, anybody’s big machine,” she tells Radio.com. “Just wanting to go your own way and make a name for yourself. Being a self-made man or woman in whatever world or industry you live or work in. To me, it’s a universal message in that way.”

She did say in another interview, however, that the song has some underlying themes that could apply in more than one way.

“I’m talking about a lot of different people,” she tells Fader magazine. “Any industry has its shoo-ins and people that get in because they know somebody, or their dad worked here, whatever. But, yeah, there is a wink.”

Though she maintains she takes no issue with Swift, Musgraves doesn’t have any desire to achieve the same level of fame as the country-turned-pop star.

“The idea of massive amounts of fame — having my face on Walgreens end-caps and pizza boxes — I don’t fantasize about that,” Musgraves explains. “Do I want to be comfortable, to live my life however I want within reason? Yeah. But I’m happy with just being a songwriter. I’d rather have smaller numbers [of fans] that are really into what I’m doing than a massive amount of people that don’t really know what I’m about.”

Musgraves released her much-anticipated sophomore album, Pageant Material, on June 23 to rave reviews, performing the title track on The View for the first time on T.V. The Grammy winner also recently announced her upcoming tour dates for her Kacey Musgraves Country & Western Rhinestone Revue.
