Born in 1789, William 'Grancer' Harrison was a wealthy planter who loved to play the fiddle and dance. His 2,500-acre Pea River plantation gained a reputation for it's square dances and specially built dance floor. Legend says Harrison's nickname from his slaves who respectfully addressed him as 'grand sir'.

Harrison requested that upon his death, he be buried in his dancing shoes on the highest hill overlooking his plantation and close enough he could hear the music.

Today, William Harrison's grave is in poor shape due to the groundless rumors that he was buried with a hoard of gold but those who pass by claim that Grancer can be heard fiddling and dancing around his grave.

The grave of 'Grancer the Dancer is in the Harrison family cemetery on County Road 473 east of Kinston, Alabama.
