As many of you may know I am an avid watcher of NBC’s ‘The Voice’. Last night, during the live performances of the Top 10, I was moved to tears by a single performance.

Team Blake member Cassadee Pope sang a version of the Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert penned Over You. Yeah, the same song Miranda took to number 1 in May of this year and the same that took CMA Song of the Year honors.

In the backstory leading up to the live performance we learned that while still a teenager Blake lost his brother and that’s what led him to write the song. That coupled with the story of Cassadee losing her grandfather had all the signs of your man Monk becoming a bumbling mess by song’s end.

I made it through the song with tears in my eyes but also knew that song was the single best performance I had ever seen on ‘The Voice’.  Her voice was crystal clear and flawless. Her emotional inflections were placed perfectly making for a brilliant performance. I think a lot of times the clarity of the song may not be conveyed over our televisions as well as it is on the sound stage where ‘The Voice’ is filmed. Not in this case, I heard every note perfectly.

After the performance, Blake describes the song as “easily the most important, and the most personal song I’ve ever been a part of writing in my life” and went on to add while talking to Cassadee, “you made me feel like I was hearing it for the first time.”

Looking at other outstanding performances on Monday night I was blown away by Nicholas David’s rendition of Lean on Me, Sylvia Yacoub’s Girl on Fire, Amanda Brown’s cover of Grace Potter’s Stars, and Terry McDermont’s Summer of ’69. I am amazed at the amount of talent this year and think any of the artists have a chance at becoming the next ‘Voice’!
