The risk of severe and hazardous storms will move toward the South and East as the week progresses. Those in the Plains, Mid-West, and Mid-South have felt the brunt of severe weather, including destructive tornadoes.

For our area, now through Thursday, the Townsquare Media Weather Center is closely monitoring the possibility of unsettled weather. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, “Plenty of instability will be available for some storms to become strong to severe.”

Outlook for Today – Tuesday, May 7

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that a “few scattered showers and storms will form during the heat of the day. Heavier storms will be capable of producing strong, gusty winds and small hail.

The threat for today is focused on the northwest half of Central Alabama between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the main threats are damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail.

Outlook for Tomorrow – Wednesday, May 8, into Thursday, May 9

Thunderstorms are predicted to sweep through the northern half of Alabama from late tomorrow night into Thursday morning. There's a good possibility these storms could escalate into strong to severe levels, carrying a risk of damaging winds and hail.

The timing for severe weather for the Townsquare Media Coverage Area is between Wednesday 10 p.m. through Thursday 7 a.m.  Also, the risk levels are split between slight and marginal risk.

This is an overnight threat, so we remind you to be sure that you don’t silence your phones when going to bed so you can receive weather alerts if needed.

Outlook for Thursday, May 9, afternoon – evening

“A few additional thunderstorms could form later in the day Thursday as a cold front pushes through the state,” said Spann. However, “most likely, the atmosphere will be worked over by earlier activity, and the severe threat Thursday afternoon/evening is relatively low.”
