The Tuscaloosa Police Department's Special Response Team liberated two children from the apartment of a neighbor who would not let them leave Sunday afternoon.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for the department, said officers were called to the Path of Tuscaloosa on 31st Street just before noon, where two residents said they had allowed their children to stay overnight with their 23-year-old neighbor, Dasha Sharnell Bishop.

This morning, though, Bishop refused to come to the door or allow the children to leave her residence.

Police could also not get Bishop to answer the door, and believing the children were in imminent danger, the SRT team breached the front door and got the children out safely around 3 p.m.

Paramedics, a youth aid investigator and mental health officers were also on the scene, Taylor said.

Bishop, who had been barricaded in her back bedroom with the children, was arrested and taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail. She was charged with felony interference with custody and jailed on a $15.000 bond, which is the highest the law allows for this offense.
