The Southeastern Conference announced its players of the week for Week 5 of the 2021 college football season and four of its 11 honorees have significant ties to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Tuscaloosa is truly Titletown. Over the years, we had have champions, award winners, world champions, and Olympic medalists. Locally, our high schools have developed some of the future stars of tomorrow. In particular, Hillcrest High School produced both of this week's Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week. Alabama super senior and Tuscaloosa-native Brian Robinson has taken the lead in the Crimson Tide backfield through two games in 2021. Robinson has taken 22 carries for 130 yards and one touchdown as the No. 1 back in a four player stable.
Alabama redshirt senior Brian Robinson Jr. has been recognized as a member of the 2021 Doak Walker Award Watch List. The Doak Walker Award is given to acknowledge the nation's top running back. The award has been in existence since 1989 and is named in honor of the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker.
In 2019, Robinson carried the ball 39 times for 259 yards and scored two touchdowns. His breakout game came against Western Carolina when he rushed for 92 yards on only eight carries. Robinson also led the Crimson Tide in rushing against New Mexico and showcased his speed with a 74-yard touchdown run.
Brian Robinson Jr. has patiently waited his turn to become the bell cow at running back for Alabama. The NCAA Division I board of directors voted to give all fall sport student-athletes an additional year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Robinson is taking full advantage.
