A West Alabama civic organization's donation will provide almost 2,200 hot meals to the area's hungry, they announced after a Tuesday meeting.

The Rotary Club of Tuscaloosa meets twice weekly and regularly raises funds for important local causes.

On Tuesday, the club members who meet for afternoon lunch announced that they have raised more than $6,600 for Tuscaloosa's Community Soup Bowl.

Five local churches founded the organization and their mission is to feed the hungry in West Alabama. The donation from the Rotary Club comes as food prices have climbed and dollars don't stretch as far as they used to.

A $100 donation used to buy 50 meals, but now the nonprofit says a gift of that size will purchase 33 hot meals.

Still, the donation from the Rotarians will fund almost 2,200 hot meals for the Community Soup Bowl to serve to those who need it most.
