One of the most enigmatic figures involved in a deadly shooting on the Tuscaloosa Strip has been subpoenaed to appear in court later this month, which could shed light on pivotal aspects of the case.

As previously reported, former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles and his longtime friend Michael Davis have been in the Tuscaloosa County Jail since they were arrested in mid-January and charged with the capital murder of 23-year-old Birmingham mother Jamea Harris.

Police and prosecutors say Miles and Davis felt unsafe after a relatively benign altercation with Harris, her boyfriend Cedric Johnson and a second woman, Asia Humphrey, who were all on the Strip the night of January 14th and into the next morning.

They say Miles texted then-teammate Brandon Miller and asked him to bring a handgun to the Strip that Miles had left in Miller's car earlier that night. Miller, who was reportedly already on the way to pick Miles up, arrived on the scene and Miles handed the gun off to his friend Michael Davis.

Police accuse Davis of opening fire on a Jeep occupied by Harris, Johnson and Humphrey, fatally injuring Harris, then fleeing the scene after he was shot twice by Johnson, who had opened fire with a handgun of his own.

That narrative led investigators to charge both Miles and Davis with capital murder shortly after the killing took place, and both have been held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond since that time.

The duo has retained different defense attorneys who say that video evidence will show that Johnson fired first and Davis was acting in self-defense when he fired Miles' gun at the Jeep on the Strip that night.

Miles and Davis will appear in court on the morning of May 24th for a hearing with Circuit Judge Daniel Pruet, who will consider whether to grant bond to either suspect - they were already denied bond when the case was still in district court earlier this year.

The appearance will double as a discovery hearing, where the suspects and their attorneys will hear what evidence the state intends to use to prosecute the case.

The state has missed two witness subpoenas ahead of the hearing - one to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit investigators leading this case, and one to Cedric Johnson, the driver of the Jeep believed to have fired four shots from a large-caliber revolver that night.

If Johnson complies with the subpoena and appears in court, it will be the first time his take on the deadly gunfight is made public - he did not appear in the district court bond hearing in February.
