Police in Tuscaloosa County are investigating after a dog fatally mauled a woman Thursday night.

Captain Marty Sellers, the co-commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, alerted local media to the killing around 7 a.m. Friday.

Sellers said sheriff's deputies were called to a residence on Highway 69 North not far from Berry regarding a dog attack.

Sellers said units arrived shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday night and found a 62-year-old woman who was inside a dog pen apparently deceased.

Sellers said the investigation began when the woman's husband called her and could not reach her, then asked a family member to go check on her. That person found her inside the pen, and was attacked by a large-breed dog when he tried to enter.

Police arrived on the scene and killed the animal, who Sellers said was a family pet who had not been an issue for the family before.

The woman, whose identity will not be publicly released, did not survive the attack.

For the privacy of the surviving family, no other details about this tragic incident will be released.
