The state of Alabama filed a misdemeanor charge against former Alabama defensive lineman and NFL star Isaiah Buggs on Friday in Tuscaloosa. He was charged with failure to pay sales tax a business he owns on Greensboro Avenue.

According to court documents filed Friday, Buggs did not file and pay sales taxes for earnings at the Kings Hookah Lounge from February 2021 to April 2022. A warrant was issued for his arrest last summer, but was withdrawn earlier this month in favor of a court summons.

Court records indicate Buggs immediately posted his $300 bail and released on bond Friday.

A motion was also filed by the state of Alabama in the District Court in Tuscaloosa County to withdraw the charge should Buggs adhere to one year of compliance with the state's Tax Board. His case will now be reheard in January of 2024 by District Judge Joanne M. Jannik.

Buggs has logged four seasons in the NFL after playing for the University of Alabama. He spent three years with the Pittsburgh Steelers after they drafted him in the sixth round, but was waived before the 2022 season. He was signed to the Las Vegas Raiders in January but the Detroit Lions signed him to its active roster in July.

He had his most productive season in the NFL this past year for the Lions appearing in all 17 games and starting in 13. Buggs accumulated 46 tackles with a sack and 10 quarterback hits.

The Louisiana native enters free agency this offseason and will be sought after by teams looking for defensive line depth.

The Kings Hookah Lounge can be found on Greensboro Avenue and operates Wednesday-Sunday according to its social media pages.
