Kalen DeBoer has Alabama sitting at 7-2 with all their playoff hopes still in their control. Alabama returns home this weekend for a 1:00 p.m. CT kick-off with the Mercer Bears, a noticeable step down from the SEC competition despite the Bears' 9-1 record this season.

The lighter competition equates to lighter questions for Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer during his weekly appearance on the SEC coaches teleconference.

DeBoer was asked about a potential change to the Crimson Tide's helmet, with Alabama historically wearing white helmets during the 1983 and 1984 seasons.

It marks 40 years since the Crimson Tide wore anything except Crimson helmets.

Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in 2022 that he did not plan on changing the Crimson Tide helmet colors, and DeBoer echoed the sentiment on Wednesday.

“You know, there’s just a lot of pride in who we are and I’m sure that somewhere in the history, you can point to different-colored helmets being worn and maybe someone is for that,” DeBoer said on the SEC coaches’ teleconference. “But right now, we’re just keeping the focus on the main thing and that’s our play on the field and representing the crimson helmet the way we can in the best possible way.”

DeBoer-led teams have worn alternate helmets before, with the Huskies wearing their traditional gold helmets 25 out of the 28 games DeBoer coached at Washington. However, the Huskies did don chrome helmets against California in 2022 and the Alamo Bowl against Texas that same year, and a purple helmet debuted against Arizona State in 2023.

DeBoer mentioned that those decisions often came from outside his office, "

Actually, with those programs or at least Washington, there was an agreement that we had to wear (purple) helmets for one game,” DeBoer said. “But for here, just the tradition and everything that surrounds the crimson helmets, (it) hasn’t even been something I’ve even thought for a second about.

“… A lot of those things don’t happen overnight either. I’m not trying to lead on like I’m even thinking about it, but sometimes it takes a year just to get a jersey or the gear that you wear on the sidelines, the gear you order from your players. And that’s the same thing with all this other stuff when it comes to game day attire as well.”
