The national attention for the state of Alabama in college basketball benefits Birmingham, with the NCAA announcing the City of Birmingham will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament in March 2028.

It marks the seventh time Birmingham will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, with the most recent time coming in 2023. Birmingham also hosted the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight five times, with the most recent being in 1997. Birmingham has never hosted the Final Four.

In 2023, Alabama was the No. 1 overall seed, defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Maryland in the round of 64 and the round of 32. Alabama lost to San Diego State in the Sweet 16 that season, played in Louisville, Kentucky.
