Ahead of the release of their newest album, Caroline Reese & the Drifting Fifth are premiering a new song, “Died Hard,” exclusively for readers of The Boot.

“Died Hard” is a quintessential country-folk ballad, full of Reese’s rich vocals and plenty of emotive charm; readers can press play below to listen. The singer tells The Boot that the tune was inspired by a bar in Townsend, Mont., and a friend who worked there.

"It came out of my brain fully formed and was as easy to produce as it was to write,” Reese says. “I love the piano-y electric guitar that my bandmate Mark Watter put in and the huge rock drums that drive the song.”

Country and folk fans may recognize Reese and her band from their time touring with acts such as Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Corb Lund. A Reading, Pa., native, Reese wrote her first album while living in Montana, but it wasn't until she returned to Pennsylvania that she formed the Drifting Fifth with Watter (a friend from a college songwriting class), Karl Germanovich and John Macko.

“Died Hard” appears on Tenderfoot, Caroline Reese & the Drifting Fifth's first full-length release as a band; the record will make its debut on Jan. 6 and is available for pre-order via BandCamp.
