Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was absolutely sensational in the Crimson Tide’s 59-3 win over New Mexico State Saturday. The sophomore became the first player in school history to throw five touchdown passes in a single half and to complete his first 13 passes. Young finished the game 21-of-23 for 270 yards and five touchdowns. It was his second game this season he threw more touchdowns than incompletions.

“I really challenged the team this week. I told them it was kind of judgment day for us,” said Nick Saban. “I thought that energy and enthusiasm and sense of urgency was really good out there today, and I think Bryce kind of led the charge on that.”

Of course, Young is no stranger to setting new Alabama records this season. The California native quickly burst onto the scene against Miami, throwing for the most passing yards and touchdowns in a starting debut in Alabama history. A few weeks later against Southern Miss, Young was the first player in Alabama with five passing touchdowns and two or fewer incompletions in a game.

Against Tennessee, Young showed the country he can be just as dangerous with his legs as he is with his arm. He became the first player in Alabama history with 350+ passing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a game.

As the season has progressed, Young has become more of a vocal leader in the Crimson Tide locker rooms. He was a captain for the fourth time this season.

“You hear his voice a lot,” defensive back Malachi Moore said. “Bryce is a very vocal leader. He tries to lead everybody on the team from defense, special teams, it doesn’t matter. He tells you go out there to do his best and to match his energy. I think that really brings everybody up. It brings everybody else in together and there’s a lot of positive energy.”

The Crimson Tide have now have 12 consecutive wins inside Bryant-Denny Stadium dating back to 2019.
