Allen Greene has stepped down from his position as the director of athletics at Auburn University.

School officials announced the news Friday. Greene's contract, which he signed upon being hired from Buffalo in 2018, was slated to expire in January.

Greene reportedly sought clarification on his future, which he wasn't afforded- the university planned to wait until football season concluded to make a decision.

The Tigers' football program has experienced turmoil following a turbulent offseason period. Head coach Bryan Harsin, whom Greene hired after the dismissal of Gus Malzahn, was at the center of controversy and is considered by many to be on the hot seat entering his second season.

Greene informed Auburn University president Chris Roberts this week that he was stepping down.

The final day of Greene's tenure will be August 31. Marcy Girton, the chief operating officer of Auburn athletics, will serve as acting athletic director.

"The decision to step away from Auburn Athletics is not an easy one, but it is the right time for me to begin the next step in my professional journey," Greene said in a prepared statement. "...I wish Auburn nothing but the best in the years ahead. I'm confident we leave Auburn athletics stronger than when we arrived."

A search for Greene's replacement is expected to commence in short order.
