Tips on Sun Exposure
UVB rays are 500 to 800 times stronger than UVA rays. They cause visible damage, commonly seen as redness and blistering and are a major cause of sunburn and skin cancer. The intensity of UVB varies by season, location and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10 am and 4 pm between April and October. UVB rays do not penetrate glass.
Although UVA rays are less intense than UVB, they are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. They are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year, and can penetrate clouds and glass.
An interesting fact: most sun damage is the result of normal sunlight exposure ovbtained through daily activities such as driving, shopping, walking, etc.
In order to get adequate protection against both UVA and UVB, you should select a sunscreen that provides multispectrum protection, broad-spectrum protection or UVA/UVB protection–not just a sunscreen with a high SPF (UVB) rating.
According to recent research, first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. People who use tanning salons are 2.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer).

Daily cleansing can take a toll on your skin. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm–rather than hot–water. Avoid strong soaps which can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers such as La Roche-Posay Lipikar soap-free (and fragrance free) cleansing gel.
Don’t leave your makeup on overnight. This is possibly the worst skin care ‘mistake’ people make. It takes a long time for the skin to remove the dirt and impurities naturally. Just remember–it only takes a few minutes and your skin will thank you in the morning!
