KRISPY KREME ICE CREAM

3/4 cup sugar
2 T. cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
5 Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts

Whisk together first 3 ingredients in a large heavy saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk and cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 10 to 12 minutes or until mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat. Whisk egg yolk until slightly thickened. Gradually whisk about 1 cup hot cream mixture into yolk. Add yolk mixture to remaining cream mixture, whisking constantly. Whisk in vanilla bean paste. Cool 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Place plastic wrap directly on cream mixture and chill 8 to 24 hours.
Chop Krispy Kreme doughnuts into small pieces. Stir 1/4 of the chopped doughnuts into the cream mixture. Pour mixture into freezer container of a 1 1/2 qt. electric ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Once the ice cream is set, stir in remaining Krispy Kreme doughnuts and put in freezer to harden.

Why They’re Unique: This is truly a favorite family owned business! The Smith family shows the more you give to the community, the more you get back. On, April 27, 2011 Tuscaloosa, Al. was hit by an F4 tornado. This tornado went for 5 miles on the ground, devastating everything in its path. Krispy Kreme was one of the establishments on this path. Over a year later, Krispy Kreme has now re-opened in the Tuscaloosa/Northport communities. During the opening day and for weeks to follow, police had to direct traffic because of the long lines to enter Krispy Kreme. The Tuscaloosa community has truly profited from the  generosity of the Smith family!

They Can Answer Questions Relating to:

1. What does the HOT LIGHT mean? The glazed doughnuts are cooking and glazing on the conveyor belt ready to box.
2. Where do doughnut holes come from? In the old days handmade doughnuts had special metal cutters to give them a different look.
3. How did the doughnut get its name? When doughnuts were made they wuld put a nut in the center to give a special surprise and taste.

Meet The Expert

Third generation doughnut maker, Evan Smith, handles the day to day running of Krispy Kreme along with second generation uncle and fifth generation children. T. W. (now deceased) and Frances Smith started Krispy Kreme in 1960. Their three sons and two daughters followed them and came into the family business. Today Frances’ (now 84) grandchildren and great grandchildren have been added to the business.

 Delicious Krispy Kreme Recipes

 

This Krispy Kreme breakfast sandwich is combined salty ham, Gruyère cheese, and an over-easy fried egg on an original glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut to create a croque madame. The flavors are amazing together.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnuts (or you can cut 2 in half if you’re delicate)
  • 2 thick slices of good smoked ham
  • 2 slices Gruyère cheese
  • Hellmann’s mayonnaise
  • 2 eggs
  • salt and pepper
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter

Directions:

Lay 2 doughnuts out on a plate. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the slices of ham on both sides briefly. Remove them to a paper towel to drain for a bit before placing each slice onto a doughnut. Top with a thin slice or two of Gruyère and microwave for a a few seconds to get the cheese melted. Smear with some mayonnaise. Melt the last tablespoon of butter in your skillet. Break one egg at a time into the pan, salt and pepper it, and fry it to your desired doneness (I’d like to make a pitch for over-easy or -medium, since the gooey yolk is delicious in this sandwich!) Place the fried egg briefly on the paper-towel lined plate to drain off the excess butter, and then place one on top of each stack of ham and Gruyère. Top both sandwiches with another doughnut as the “top bun.” Serve immediately.

Yep that is a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich between a Krispy Kreme doughnut bun.

The Krispy Kreme Breakfast Sandwich

  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices of bacon
  • 1 slice of your favorite cheese
  • 1 Krispy Kreme Doughnut
  • Salt and pepper to taste

To start you need a Krispy Kreme Doughnut. I used a fresh off the line doughnut and it was a little too soft to cut. I would recommend using one that has completely cooled. Cut the doughnut in half.

Next fry up some bacon. I used the microwave as I was in a hurry. Place the two strips of bacon on a couple layers of paper towel that are arranged on a microwave safe plate. Cover the bacon with another paper towel and place in the microwave on high for 4 minutes. It comes out perfect every time. Microwaves vary so you may have to decrease or increase the time by 30 seconds.

Next fry up an egg. I like a hard yolk in my breakfast sandwiches. Maybe it is because the golden arches as a kid, not sure. But I usually break the egg to get a nice solid egg platform. Cook the egg and then fold it into a square. Place the bacon on top and then layer on the cheese. To melt the cheese perfectly, put a couple of drops of water in the pan and then cover. The steam will melt the cheese perfectly.

Don’t worry about the calories.
