The Alabama football team held its last practice of the spring on Thursday ahead of Saturday's A-Day game, and head coach Nick Saban met with reporters to preview the game and talk about his team's preparation.

The roster will be split into a Crimson and a White team with the winner eating steak and the loser getting beans.

"The format for A-Day is to create the best competition that we can," Saban said. "The White team will consist of the first defense and the second offense. The Crimson team will have the first offense and the second defense. So the ones will always play against the ones. It's the most competitive way that we can have the game."

The format has been well-received since Saban's first spring in Tuscaloosa. Ten years ago, Alabama fans set a new attendance record by filling up Bryant-Denny Stadium with more than 90,000 fans, which started a new trend across college football.

"We hope we have a great crowd. I think our fans need to know the support of A-Day has been something that's been a tremendous asset in helping us build the program here. It's a real positive for the recruits that they see that kind of support, energy and enthusiasm."

Along with previewing A-Day, Saban also hit on these topics during his press conference:

  • The team's effort as spring practice finishes up
  • The former Crimson Tide players that are coming back for Saturday's game
  • How much the quarterbacks have progressed this spring
  • The status of the kicking game
  • Update on Bo Scarbrough's injury recovery
  • The players that will miss A-Day due to injury
  • What he gets out of helping coach the defensive backs at practice
  • College football transfers
