Coach Bill Courtney is a family man and businessman, but most importantly he's a coach and has a commonsense approach to life and the inherent ability to motivate people.

You might recall hearing the name Bill Courtney back in 2010 when he and his Manasas Tigers became the subject of the Academy Award winning film, 'Undefeated' about a downtrodden group of inner city high school football players who overcame the adversity in their lives and banded together as brothers to pull off the first winning season in their school's history.

The movie has opened up a ton of doors making the coach a sought after man! When he's not with his family, running his business or coaching his son's football team, he travels the country on speaking engagements. As a matter of fact, that's how he and I first met. I was attending the Country Cares for St. Jude seminar in Memphis this past January and our secret guest speaker was Coach Bill. The room sat wide-eyed and hung onto every word coming out of his mouth. Notes were taken as were tips on how to push the message of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to the masses through radio airwaves.

Well, now his life just got busier and book stores across the country are now stocking copies of 'Against the Grain, A Coach's Wisdom on Character, Faith, Family, and Love' written by Coach Bill.

In this book he takes the wisdom he's gained from several different influential sources in his life growing up and couples that with faith, heart, commonsense and an open minded, no nonsense approach to becoming a better person. Chapter titles like, "The Meaning of Commitment," "How Leaders Are Defined," "The Dignity of Hard Work," and "The Gift of a Legacy" are motivation enough to quickly become a part of what he has to say.

You'll get the story of several of the football players that have touched his life as well as anecdotes on how he's handled life situations with his own family, friends and employees. This is a book to show the world that you don't need to have money, you don't need to possess fame to be a better person and to touch other peoples lives and to move them. These are teachings for the every-man or every-woman.

Realizing and showing our true character and making a difference is inside of us all and through this book Coach Bill helps to crank the old generator and blow out all the cobwebs and dust to give you his insight on these things. Hopefully we'll walk away with a better overall view and appreciation for ourselves and what we're capable of.
