Legion Field in Birmingham has been selected to host the fourth match of the United States women’s national soccer team’s victory tour on Sunday, September 20th at 1:30. The event, which will be televised on ESPN2, is apart of a 10-city victory tour that will take place this fall. The newly-crowned 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions will battle the Australian women’s national soccer team.

The USA and Australia met in the opening Group D game of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a 3-1 U.S. victory on two goals from Megan Rapinoe and a game-winner from Christen Press that kick-started the USA’s run to the championship.

“Birmingham has a strong history with U.S. soccer, as it has served as a host for multiple friendly competitions and a men's World Cup qualifier,” stated Gene Hallman, CEO of Bruno Event Team and Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Foundation. “This event will reinforce Birmingham’s reputation as being a superior host to a wide variety of sporting events and we couldn’t be more excited to once again bring history to Birmingham.”

The United States Women’s National Soccer team (USWNT) is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation and has proven to be one of the most successful teams in international soccer. The USWNT is currently ranked No. 1 after its 5-2 victory over Japan in the 2015 World Cup, and the first three-time FIFA Women’s World cup winner.

“Showcasing the world champions right here in Birmingham is exciting for our city,” stated Chairman of the Alabama Sports Foundation Dr. Larry Lemak. “The U.S. women’s final game was the most watched soccer match in American history and we look forward to having an outstanding crowd in September.”

Other cities that have been selected to host the friendly victory tour are Chattanooga, Detroit and Pittsburgh. The remaining six match dates, venues and opponents will be announced as they are confirmed.

“It is an honor for the City of Birmingham to be selected to host one of the 10-city games,” stated City of Birmingham Mayor William Bell.  “The city has been working hard to bring this historic game to Birmingham and everything is finally coming together.”

Tickets for the September games will go on sale on Friday, July 31, at 10:00 a.m. and can be purchased online at ussoccer.com, ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-745-3000.
