Ulysses Grant White was one of twelve children born in the late 1800's. A farming accident in 1917 resulted in the loss of his right arm, he started U.G White Hardware and Implement Co. on South Marion Street in Athens, Alabama.  Farmers could buy their Farmalls to work the fertile soil in surrounding counties that produced cotton, corn, oats, wheat, potatoes and hay. Radios, heating stoves and kitchenware could also be found at the store.

After twenty years of meeting Athen's mercantile needs, White moved to a more strategic location in 1937 and purchased then remodeled the corner of 101 Jefferson Street where it remains today.
