So, here I am reading this update on more red light cameras which are about to be introduced in Tuscaloosa. Apparently, city engineers are busy setting up these devices at busy intersections, with more set to go live within a month. Is this a good thing?

WBRC-TV reports:

Currently, only one working red light camera is up and running, the one in front of McDonalds on 15th Street near Dr. Edward Hilliard Drive. That camera has been working since September.

The most recent available stats from Tuscaloosa police show 252 driver were fined in December 2013 for running red lights there. That's down from 306 in September 2013.

Whoa! Wait, there is only one active camera right now. Hmm, did you know that? I'm surprised to hear that and the fact it sent out 252 violations in a month. Doesn't that sound a little high?

Sure, I get it, the red light cameras come with the intention to lower accidents and make busy intersections a little safer. It's the whole big brother is watching you factor that freaks me out a bit. I know I should get over that, because we are being watched everywhere. Every... where. Stores, offices, sidewalks and even your phone has GPS tracking your every move. So, why does the red light camera bother me?

I mean, shouldn't I be happy about safer intersections?  Well, what about the drivers slamming on the breaks when they see yellow?  Look out!  Is there really a severe red light danger in this town or is it a nice revenue generator to have the cameras sending tickets?

I am sure that you have an opinion on this, let's hear it! I've created a quick and easy poll, plus a comment box is available below.
