‘The Walking Dead’ Season 5: Cast and Crew Talk What’s Next After the Season 4 Finale
‘The Walking Dead‘ season 4 came to a close with Sunday night’s finale, “A,” but while there were plenty of gun play, reunions and drama to be had, there still lacked any major revelation or surprise to leave us craving more from the upcoming season 5, to air this fall. In the latest behind-the-scenes videos from AMC’s hit drama, the cast and crew all try and wrap up what we saw last night, while speculating what’ll come to pass next season, using buzz words like “brutal” and “explosive” to get us pumped.
Consider yourself warned of spoilers from the finale — we had some grievances to air from ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 finale (our full review here), mainly that after a dragged-out season 4 and a more intense mid-season finale, we still got an underwhelming finish. According to such behind-the-lense figures as executive producers Robert Kirkman, Greg Nicotero and Scott Gimple, though, the finale was more about coming full circle in realizing that the group can’t actually go back to where they were, not even in a new sanctuary, which turned out to be another trap.
Elsewhere, Kirkman spoke to TV Line about the rumor floating around that the folks at Terminus could be cannibals, much like the “Hunters” of the comics. “There are a great many number of possibilities for that storyline and who those characters are and what they’re doing, and that is certainly one of them,” he confessed. “It’s not completely out of the realm of possibility, but I can neither confirm nor deny anything at this time. Who the people of Terminus are and what their deal is will be dealt with fairly quickly when we come back for season 5.”
“All hell broke loose at [season] 4,” chimed in Chad Coleman (Tyreese), of whom we still don’t know the fate, in addition to Carol and baby Judith. “Now it gets scaled down, but even harder.”
Having seen Rick go ballistic once again in the finale and realizing that perhaps he can never really go back to the way things were at the prison, Nicotero teased of the forthcoming season 5, “I would pretty much guarantee that we’re going to see a completely different Rick Grimes in season 5, one that is just willing to do anything and would never question any motive or any decision; he just goes into it head first.” While we haven’t heard form Chandler Riggs, it looks like we’ll be seeing a whole new Carl, as well, especially after his revelation that he “still has those thoughts” and that he’s not what his dad thinks he is.
The last scene of the season 4 finale saw Rick, Michonne and Carl reuniting with Glenn, Maggie, Sasha and Bob, and their new friends Tara, Abraham, Rosita and Eugene in the Terminus holding tank. According to Lauren Cohan (Maggie), this means only one thing: “You know there’s no way there’s not gonna be an explosive beginning to season 5.”
“It’s gonna be messy, it’s gonna be brutal, it’s gonna be thrilling, how these guys get out of this scrape,” said Andrew Lincoln (Rick).
For those of you who’ve seen the ‘Walking Dead’ season 4 finale last night, what do you think? Was the “big reveal” that Terminus isn’t what it seemed worth the wait? There’s more making-of footage and interviews with the cast and crew in the three videos below, in case you need to know more from the episode, but let us know what you think in the comments.
