Alabama is home to 66 known snake species and subspecies. Of those, 11 are venomous while the remaining 55 species and subspecies pose no threat.

Northport Fire & Rescue reported on Thursday that a 14-year-old girl was recovering after being bitten by a copperhead at Kentuck Park in Northport. She was treated at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham and is said to be doing fine.

Snakes are in abundance in every corner of Alabama and the summer months are when you're most likely to run across one, venomous or not. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, venomous snakes bite about 8,000 people each year. Nationwide, only 9 to 15 people die from a snakebite.

Outdoor Alabama has put together a photo collection of venomous and non-venomous snakes as well as snakes by color that might be helpful in your outdoor adventures. The Mayo Clinic has also gathered a list of what to do and what not to do if you're bitten by a snake.
