Toadvine is a small community in Jefferson County but don't be fooled by its strange title. Amphibians were not involved in the naming of this territory.

During the Civil War, a man named Cape Smith left Jefferson County to join the fight but was eventually caught and imprisoned by federal soldiers. Smith was known to be easily aggravated which especially entertained his fellow prisoner, Nash.

One day, Nash decided to pick on his nervous friend by whistling, something that particularly peeved Smith. Although Smith asked him repeatedly to stop, all requests were ignored. Finally, another inmate by the name of Toadvine stood up for Smith and attacked Nash, putting a stop to the annoying sound. When Smith arrived home from the war, a post office was being built in a new community. Smith offered to name it Toadvine after his brave friend and the name stuck ever since.
